Puppets, Puppet Play or Puppetry has been in existence from time immemorial and has existed across all parts of world and all cultures. We all have grown up watching them if not in real then in movies. It has been a great and interesting way of story-telling, but with internet and so much advancement in technology, these little things which once made people come together and enjoy are disappearing. What is a Kathputli?

Puppets are beautifully designed wooden toys that wear bright and extremely colourful clothes and have beautiful eyes that are proportionately larger compared to their faces. They dance beautifully in front of audiences, the movement of which is controlled by the master fingers of the puppeteer. Together with enthralling music and interesting stories, these puppet players have always been able to capture audiences with their puppet shows.

Kathputli was once major art form for story-telling and entertainment. Today, however we all know about it but its popularity and essence is decreasing day by day. Modern day entertainment options like television, movies, internet are fast displacing such traditional art forms that are dying a slow death. Puppetry art is one of them which is dying today, the dramatic urge is being replaced by sheer entertainment.

  • Are you a Teacher? If yes then you can help our traditional puppeteers by organizing their shows in schools for children to see. Puppet show can be a fun activity and children can participate in making small puppets guided by the puppet make.You never know these bright young minds can grow up and find innovative ideas to promote this craft.

It is also a great way of making children aware of different Indian folklore and traditional stories which has some learning.
